The industrial Revolution was the time where hand-produced goods were changed to machine-produced goods. During the Revolution, many inventions were created on farms and in factories, which had sprung up in urban areas. In the factories, goods were produced very efficiently, meaning they were mass-produced. New forms of transportation and energy sources were discovered such as the invention of the locomotive and the use of coal for energy. The revolution created a consumer society, meaning people were starting to buy "wants" instead of just needs. Also, with the invention of machines, many peasants were not needed on the farms and moved to cities to find jobs. However, the revolution had bad elements in it as well. Children who were as young as 5 years old and not in any way fit to work had to work in coal mining, chimney sweeping, and other tiresome and dangerous jobs. Workers were also paid very low wages. However, reforms came out of the revolution that would remedy or begin to remedy these issues.
