Dred Scott v Sandford (1 янв 1856 г. – 1 янв 0 г.)

Описание:

Dred Scott v Sandford was a Supreme Court case in which Dred Scott argued that he was a free man because his owner had taken him to free territory. Since the government was ran primarily by Southern Democrats, the Court did not rule in favor of Dred Scott. The Supreme Court ruled that Dred Scott did not have the right to be in a court because the Constitution did not intend for African Americans to be considered citizens, the government could not take away a citizen's property, and the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.

Dred Scott v Sandford was significant because it officially ruled that African Americans have no rights because they would never be considered citizens. This ruling by the Supreme Court especially upset Northern Republicans because they stood for freedom of slaves and the prevention of the expansion of the practice. The decision allowed for slave states to be created in any territory which further angered Northerners, increasing tensions.
