• Facts:
o gent is found in animal and human intestines due to various transmissions such as taking contaminated water and, food (beef, water, feces, milk and juice, fruits/vegetables, etc.)
o Each year, in the US, about 100 die, and 265,000 are infected.
• Symptoms/Treatment:
o The symptoms vary depending on the different types of E. Coli. But for my given type the symptoms are bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, bloody urine, and loss of appetite. These symptoms can lead to kidney failures and death. 1-10 days of incubation after being infected. After appearance of symptoms, it usually last 5-10 days.
o Make sure when you are eating food or drinking fluids that they are cooked thoroughly (especially beef), having washed hands, washing your fruits and vegetables, and not swallowing water in public pools.
o IF NOT TREATED, it can lead to vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and possibly death
o Drinking plenty of water and fluids, as well as, getting rest can help improve the body to heal. If it is getting worse, going to the doctor is needed.
• Historical Events:
o 1885: Discovered by Theodor Escherich
o 1982: E. coli O157:H7 was first recognized as a human pathogen during an investigation into an outbreak. It resulted to hemorrhagic colitis related with consumption of hamburgers from a fast food chain restaurant.
o 1993:  Major outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in the Northwest associated with consumption of undercooked ground beef.
• Not eradicated
