At 4:56 pm on September 7 1940, the sound of the sirens filled the city as the German Air Forces launched a massive raid on London. The frequent bombing attacks on London by German bombers were known as the Blitz. This raid occurred after the Battle of Britain. When the Germans failed the Battle of Britain, they decided that, instead of destroying the air force, they would try to demoralize the British people by bombing civilian populace, as they had done previously in Belgium, France, and Holland. The raids followed the failure of the German Luftwaffe to defeat Britain’s Royal Air Force in the Battle of Britain. Although there was an abundant amount of death, the bombing did not have an effect on Britains ability to continue in the war.
