President Lincoln and Congress sign a bill the day after the defeat of Bull Run, calling for the enlistment of 500000 volunteer troops for the duration of 3 years. Three days later, on July 25, he called upon another 500000 to enlist. The defeat had sobered up the Union, who were now painfully aware that it was not going to be a quick battle (Simon, Holzer & Ruark, 2002, p. 6).
