The Shepherd is difficult to date accurately, as internal evidence can point to an early date within the lifetime of a Clement who is mentioned (ch. 8.3) and is thought to be the same person of "1 Clement". External evidence places it before c.175 AD as it is mentioned by Irenaeus.

But the Muratonian Canon (c.180-200) also mentions The Shepherd as being written "quite recently in our time" in Rome. Internal evidence makes this data inconsistent, unless the theory that it is a composite document is accurate. If so, then chapters 1-24 would be written earlier, and 25-114 written later in the time of the Muratonian Canon.
