The Olmec civilization was the first major civilization in Mexico. They lived in the tropical lowlands on the Gulf of Mexico, in the present-day which the was Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco. Around 400 B.C. the great Olmec city of La Venta went into decline, taking the Olmec Classic era with it.
