James Chadwick, an English physicist, is widely known for his discovery of the neutron in 1932. This occurred resulting from his observation that beryllium, when exposed to bombardment by alpha particles, emitted a radiation which ejected protons from the nuclei of multiple substances. Chadwick deciphered that said radiation is composed of particles of mass equal to that of the proton but without electrical charge—neutrons. The discovery of the neutron is crucial to the understanding of the atom as it is a key component of its structure.
