The region of Acre had revolted multiple times against the Bolivian authorities. The residents of the region had hoped to join Brazil, but the Empire of Brazil, not wanting to start conflict with Bolivia, avoided the issue, but pressed Bolivia to give the region autonomy. However, during another revolt in 1899, 14 Brazilians living in Acre were killed and when the Bolivians refused to apologize, Brazil declared war.

Paraguay, who had been strengthening ties with Bolivia since 1884, had a massive army. Hoping to annex their claimed land in Brazil, Paraguay joined the war as well, greatly aiding the Bolivians.

This was the first major conflict for the third king of Brazil, Pedro III, and as a result, the fighting was slow. However, the extremely high moral of the Brazilian military proved to be enough in the end, resulting in the Treaty of Petrópolis.

In the treaty, Brazil annexed the Acre region of Bolivia, as well as establishing a large area of influence over Eastern Bolivia; controlling the vast rubber plants. In Paraguay, where most of the fighting occurred, the government was replaced with a pro-Brazilian one and Paraguay itself was established as a Brazilian client state.
