The Mauryan Dynasty, founded by Chandragupta Maurya, was the first empire to unite India. At its height, the empire spanned from Bactria to Central India. The system of government of the Mauryan Dynasty was developed by an advisor named Kautalya and defined ways to collect taxes, oversee trade and agriculture, wage war, maintain foreign relations, and maintain order. The use of spies was also very common in the Mauryan Dynasty, due to Kautalya's influence. At its height, the Mauryan Dynasty had an economy stimulated by trade facilitated by an empire-wide system of roads, irrigation systems, a capital at Pataliputra, and a unified system of laws influenced by Buddhist philosophies.
