The Hellenistic world, the result o fAlexander the Great's conquests, was characterized by cosmopolitanism, there finement of art and the specialization of knowledge in the various sciences. With the disappearance of the polis as a model of coexistence, many philosophers took refuge in the territory of intimacy and individual happiness.
