Prohibition was, essentially, a massive mistake. Prohibition in the United States – the government-imposed ban on alcohol - did very little but to usher in large groups of criminal gangs and the flourishing of crime. It is often criticized, though not necessarily absolutely truly, that this era single-handedly caused massive upspikes in crime in urban areas that lasted for many years after the end of the era.
