The Reciprocity Treaty (0 ч 1 мин, 1 янв 1854 г. – 0 ч 1 мин, 1 дек 1865 г.)

Описание:

Signed in 1854, this allowed free trade between the United States and Britain with no taxes, of agricultural products and natural resources between North America and the United States. After the American Civil War ended in 1861, the United States ended the Reciprocity Treaty and began heavily taxing goods from British North America. The end of this treaty had a negative impact on the economy of the colonies. British Columbia benefited greatly from this treaty and when it ended began attempting to create less expensive products through cheap labor.

In 1911, after noticing how the national policy of Sir John A. Macdonald's Conservatives did not benefit rural Canadians, especially farmers. This caused, then Priminister, Sir Wilfred Laurier to propose a new reciprocity agreement with the United States. Under this deal, many cheaper American goods would be able to enter Canada free of tariffs and in return, a limited number of Canadian products could freely enter the United States. The government of the United States was in favor of the proposal. However, Canadians were divided over the issue. Those who were loyal to the British opposed the idea as they feared reciprocity would lead to annexation by the United States. French Canadian nationalists say that this as an opportunity to cut off ties with Britain.
The proposed legislation lead to a revolt within the Liberal Party and 18 powerful Liberals switched their support to the Conservatives, the main opposition of the Liberals. Laurier's Liberal Party lost the 1911 election and the ultimately the agreement was repudiated by Canadians after Laurier's defeat.
