The Third Imperial Succession Crisis began as a squabble between Jidrik and Hanzi for the imperial throne, but it quickly grew into a battle to determine whether Cantegeszo would be controlled by its noble aristocracy, or by the legions and their generals - the former largely supporting Hanzi, and the latter supporting Jidrik.

The Third Imperial Succession Crisis outlasted both claimants to the throne. Immensely destructive sieges, battles and scorched earth tactics, the violent migrations of the Rinyn, Wochniks and Numatsi into the Navrak, and the length of the fighting left the Navrak Valley devastated, and the Empire utterly drained of manpower and money.

By the time Redrik II took control of the legion-aligned faction in the imperial government, nearly every major city in the Empire had been sacked at least once, the Rinyn and Wochniks were running rampant in the Upper Navrak, and the Numatsi were pillaging to their hearts' content in the Middle and Lower Navrak.

Using the seized treasures of noble families and generous donations from the imperial church, including melted down artefacts from the time of Jagnon himself, Redrik II used what little manpower he had left to swell the size of his legions, paid a short tribute to the Rinyn and Wochnik to secure a truce with them, and marched south.

At the Battle of Vjegwur, Redrik II defeated Jalans, son of Jidrik, and finally reunified what remained of the Cantegeszan state, subjugating the nobles under the authority of the legions and their generals.
