Shortly after Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the first telephone, came more variations of the phone that were more appealing and improved communication. The "top box" phone was a later advancement of his technology. In 1879 an early example of the "top box" was from Viaduct Manufacturing Co., but several other companies introduced it as well. The most standard popular model of the "top box" was by The Western Electric company from 1882. It was one of the first telephone designs that was mainly for business and home. It was wall mounted with a microphone attached to the front of box and a magnet handle on the right hand side of box that you would turn then the operator would be alerted by a ringing produced by the two bell's on top of the box. The "top box" was an important step in making telephone technology more reliable and available to the public, it's aesthetic appearance became the "trademark look" of its era.
