Description:
The campaign (“war”) against the Islamic State starting in 2014 involved different military coalitions with different priorities. There is a U.S.-led coalition which grew from 9 NATO allies into a network of nearly 60 states. This coalition conducted concentrated airstrikes in Iraq and Syria and provided support for Kurdish and Arab militias. This coalition is the most involved in terms of intelligence, special operations, arms deliveries, surveillance and helped to liberate Mosul and Raqqa in 2017. The France-led coalition had European, Middle Eastern (Jordan, UAE, Saudi Arabia) and Asian states (China, Russia) that provided support to Baghdad and focused on the Islamic State’s economic levers like their oil trade and ransom economy. After the Paris attacks of 2015, France carried out bombing runs on IS strongholds. Finally, the Russian-led coalition (advisers from Iran, military from Hezbollah and other support from Jordan and Israel) was ostensibly a counterterrorist coalition and did carry out operations against the IS but was also antagonistic to the West by supporting Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria by targeting some western-backed opposition militias. Together, they dismantled IS’s hold on territory, though at the cost of massive civilian casualties and the entrenchment of rival spheres of influence in the Middle East.
