Description:The Suez Crisis erupted after Egyptian President Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal in July 1956, angering Britain and France, who previously controlled the canal. Israel invaded the Sinai Peninsula on October 29 that year, followed by British and French forces landing near Port Said. The operation aimed to regain Western control of the canal and remove Nasser from power. International pressure, especially from the United States and the Soviet Union, forced a ceasefire and withdrawal of British, French and Israeli forces. While militarily the operation initially succeeded in capturing parts of the Sinai and Port Said, Egypt retained control of the Suez Canal. The crises boosted Nasser’s prestige across the Arab world and marked a decline in British and French influence in the Middle East.
