King Leopold II and the Congo Free State (1885 CE–1908 CE) (15 ноя 1885 г. – 26 фев 1908 г.)

Описание:

In 1885 CE, King Leopold II of Belgium claimed a large area in Central Africa as his personal colony, calling it the Congo Free State. Although he claimed it was for humanitarian and civilizing purposes, it became one of the most brutal examples of colonial exploitation in African history. Under Leopold’s rule, Congolese people were forced to collect rubber under violent conditions. Those who resisted or failed to meet quotas were beaten, mutilated, or killed. Millions of people died due to forced labor, starvation, and disease. This period is a powerful example of how imperialism and colonialism were used to justify extreme violence and economic gain at the expense of African lives. International outrage eventually forced Leopold to give up control, and in 1908 CE, the Congo became a Belgian colony under official government rule.
