The Byzantine (bi-zuhn-teen) Age of Greece began when the Roman Empire divided into two parts, with the eastern part becoming the Byzantine Empire, with its capital in Constantinople( kaan-stan-tuh-now-poll). Greece was a crucial part of this empire. Even though the Byzantines followed the Romans in government, they spoke Greek and used Greek traditions. One huge change that happened during this time was the rise of Christianity. The people stopped worshiping the Greek gods and became Christian, building breathtaking churches like the ones with domes and golden mosaics(where an image or pattern is built in little pieces to create the bigger picture). Religion became a big part of their lives, and the church had a lot of power in the lives. They celebrated religious holidays, went to church often, and followed the religious customs. Art and music were the religious symbols and church songs were everywhere. Education at this time was mostly about learning the Bible and church, but people still studied Greek writing and history. Even though the wars and hard times affected them, the Byzantine/Greeks kept many traditions alive and helped protect Greek language and culture for many years to come.
