(a.k.a. The Battle of Sambre)Fourth battle encompassed by the Battle of the Frontiers.
Fought between the French Fifth Army of General Charles Lanrezac and the German Second and Third Armies. On 21 August, German troops crossed the Sambre at two locations. Lanrezac ordered a counterattack on the 22 August, but it was ultimately a failure. The battle ended with the retreat of the French.
