Following the annexation of Texas, the Mexican-American conflict occurred due to discrepancies regarding where the Texan border ended. People who sided with America said it ended at the Rio Grande, meanwhile Mexicans believed it was at the Nueces River. The conflict started when Mexican troops fired at American troops who were in territory that the Mexicans believed were theirs. After 2 years, the Americans would win the war, and the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo would be signed, nearly doubling the size of the US in exchange for $15 million. The outcome of this war brought to light the issue of the expansion of slavery, with the new territory acquired leading to disputes over which states should become free states or slave states. This would contribute to the Civil War by increasing tensions overall, especially with the Compromise of 1850.
