Following their annexation of Kuwait, the United States, in coalition with 42 other countries, responds to Iraq in two phases:

Operation Desert Shield
(Aug 1990 - Jan 1991)
Due to Saudi Arabia's access to oil, the Western world feared further Iraqi aggression and, thus, responded by building up militaries to protect Saudi Arabia and deter Iraq from furthering its campaign. Additionally, the US feared that Israel was in danger as Hussein threatened to chemical weapons attacks on the country. This operation is also meant to garner support for the UN's Resolution 678.

Operation Desert Storm
(Jan 17 - Feb 28, 1991)
In response to Iraqi defiance of Resolution 678, the US and its coalition partake in a series of airstrikes of Iraqi forces over 43 days, followed by a 100-hour ground campaign.

RESULTS:
The US and cooperating countries announce a ceasefire to commence following Iraq's acceptance of the UN resolutions. Media coverage of the frontlines in the form of live broadcasts is the first of its kind, showing footage directly from the fighting as it happened.
- 147 US deaths
- 47 British deaths
- Upwards of 35,000 Iraqi deaths
- Upwards of 200,000 civilian deaths
