Women’s Entry into Industry: Women begin working in clerical positions like stenographers and switchboard operators, exemplified by the "Gibson Girl" ideal of independence and modernity. However, many women work under poor conditions for low wages, contributing to the growing working-class disparity.

Increased Foreign Trade: With improvements in international communications and transportation (like the transatlantic telegraph and the Suez Canal), U.S. industrial goods, especially kerosene from Standard Oil, are exported worldwide.

Agricultural Decline in the South: While the South experiences some industrial growth, it still lags behind, especially in manufacturing. Southern agriculture continues to be reliant on sharecropping and tenant farming.
