Created by Emperor Justinian. Fulfilled all three requirements for a valid codification of civil law.
This would constitute the basis of virtually every legal system in Continental Europe.
Consisted of four parts:
1. Codex - leges.
- All past imperial constitutions based on date of issue.
- Twelve books to pay homage to the Twelve Tables of the Roman Republic.
2. Digest - ius.
- Collection of commentaries by jurists after the introduction of the edict perpetuum by Emperor Hadrian.
3. Institutions - textbooks.
- Textbook for first year law students, that was also given the force of law.
4. Novels - new leges.
- New imperial constitutions issued by Emperor Justinian and other Emperors after the creation of the Codex.
