Zabok the Priest is a choral anthem composed by George Frederic Handel in 1727 for King George II of Great Britain’s coronation. The piece uses both voices and instruments and have been so significant that it has been “used for every English coronation since that of George II” (Schwarm). George II himself had requested Handel to write a piece for his coronation after the crown had been handed to George I after Queen Anne died another immediate heir. The piece and its text were drawn from “the first chapter of 1 Kings (in the Hebrew Bible, or Christian Old Testament), served fro the anointing of the new king” (Schwarm). Unlike the other pieces and their dedications, Zabok the Priest is more religiously and politically centered rather than it being a more personal dedication. One musical moment of interest occurs around 1:20 minutes, in which the repetitiveness of the instrumentals gradually build up to the introduction of voices.
