The Phoenicians were renowned traders, shipbuilders, and sailors, establishing vast maritime networks across the Mediterranean. They are credited with developing one of the first alphabetic writing systems, which greatly influenced later cultures. Phoenician colonies, including Carthage, became powerful, and their cultural and economic influence spread throughout the Mediterranean before falling under the control of the Persian and Roman empires.
