The eruption was one of the most powerful in U.S. history, blasting off the top of the mountain, causing massive landslides, and sending ash high into the atmosphere. The eruption destroyed forests, rivers, and homes in the area, killing 57 people. It left a huge crater in the mountain and reshaped the surrounding landscape.
