The Triple Alliance was between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy and was a defensive alliance. It started as an alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary, initiated by their dislike of Russia. Later Italy joined, with the goal of isolating France after it lost Tunis to them, a region close to Sicily with a large Italian population.
