→ compared gender roles in three New Guinea cultures
→ argued that gender roles are culturally constructed, not biologically determined
→ began her career as a public intellectual

Controversy:
-allegedly bad at the Samoan language, naively believed lies, and framed the Samoan experience on her own sexual desires
-had many lovers (you go girl!)
