A package of laws that attempted to reduce sectional tensions by admitting California as a free state, strengthening the Fugitive Slave Act, and allowing popular sovereignty in certain territories. The Fugitive Slave Act, in particular, inflamed Northern abolitionist sentiments, while Southerners saw it as necessary to protect their way of life.
The Fugitive Slave Act’s enforcement caused violent confrontations, such as the Anthony Burns Recapture (1854) and the Christiana Riot (1851). This increased Northern resistance to the expansion of slavery and contributed to the formation of the Republican Party (1854), which explicitly opposed the extension of slavery.
