Prigg v. Pennsylvania 1842 (30 дек 1841 г. – 1 янв 1842 г.)
Описание:
In this U.S. Supreme Court case, the Court ruled that federal law (specifically the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793) took precedence over state laws aimed at protecting runaway slaves. States were not required to enforce fugitive slave laws, but they couldn’t obstruct federal agents from doing so.
This decision revealed the growing tensions between states' rights and federal power, especially regarding the issue of slavery. Northern states responded with "personal liberty laws," attempting to thwart the capture of fugitive slaves, leading to further discord that culminated in the stronger Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
