The Civil War was a war between the northern and southern states of the United States over slavery. The northern states wanted to abolish slavery while the south wanted to keep slavery legal. The south had attempted to establish themselves as an independent nation, separate from the north. They called this new nation the "Confederate States of America". Eventually in 1864, following the unfortunate death of President Abraham Lincoln, the south had surrendered and slavery had been abolished. This war impacted the millions of being within these regions, causing a permanent division between the United States citizens of the north and the south that has continued to linger up until the modern day.
