D. Dinis focuses on a policy of national development. To this end, he creates fairs and free markets in various locations across the country, promoting trade with other kingdoms in the process.Dinis also sought to solidify Portuguese identity, by mandating Portuguese be used as the official language in all issued documents from his reign onwards. The initial foundations of modern Portuguese universities also begin under his watch, on March 1st, 1290, teaching Grammar, Medicine, Law, Arts and Canons.
D. Dinis would rule Portugal until 1325.
