communication design (2nd image) -
'step right up amigos... have a coke' coca cola advertisement from 1941. designer unknown.
this poster was designed in america and was put up on billboards and walls, along with being printed in newspaper. its intended audience were those that were home from the war, particularly americans, and it was a way of convincing them that coca cola was a patriotic company.
the drawings are hand-painted in what looks like oil paint, and the rest is typed using computers. the design would have been printed on paper or maybe wooden boards for larger scale purposes.
millions of americans were serving abroad during world war ii, and this design used the current circumstances of these people as a marketing tool. the ad and campaign aimed to increase trust in the company and give opportunity for coca cola to grow and set up shop overseas.
coca cola's advertisement designers were influential to the entire 1950s design movement. many other companies employed similar tactics of pretty, hand-painted imagery and small amounts of information with a tagline.
