Old Communist officials (hardliners) fear loss of power/privilege and loss of Communism

Communist rulers detain Gorbachev & demand resignation

Communists order tanks into Moscow
- people willing to defend
- hardliners order troops to kill people who are defending
- the people stand up and tell the army to go away --> army LISTENS because they don't actually want to kill their own people
