Fifth Aliyah (1 янв 1929 г. – 1 янв 1939 г.)

Описание:

The Fifth Aliyah, occurring from 1929 to 1939, saw 225,000 to 300,000 Jews immigrate to Palestine from Europe and Asia. This wave began as a pioneering effort but transformed into a mass migration, particularly after 1933, due to the rise of Nazi Germany and escalating racial persecution. This period included the severe Arab riots from 1936 to 1939 in Mandatory Palestine and was further impacted by the British White Paper of 1939, which drastically limited Jewish immigration. The onset of World War II also hindered further immigration.

The primary reasons for this wave of immigration were the oppressive antisemitism and economic disenfranchisement under Hitler, prompting a significant number of Jews to flee Germany and Eastern Europe. The Haavara Agreement in 1933, a transfer deal between the Jewish agency and Nazi authorities, allowed Jews leaving Germany to recover some of their assets and facilitated the import of German goods to Palestine, supporting the local Jewish economy. Additionally, British colonial administrator Arthur Wauchope, who was pro-Zionist, facilitated immigration by granting many permits and promoting the Jewish economy and Zionist settlement. The closure of immigration to the United States during this period further redirected Jewish migration toward Palestine.
