The Harlem Renaissance (Black Renaissance/ New Negro Movement) means the development of Harlem neighborhood in NYC to the black cultural mecca. It involves a cultural renaissance and a social and artistic explosion. It is the golden age in African American culture which is also recognized by white publishers and marks the opening of mainstream culture to Black artists. Names such as Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Nella Larsen, Claude McKay, Richard Wright, Lois Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, Archibald Motley, Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, and Josephine Baker are examples for mainstream publishers who focus on African American literature, music, art, politics.
South Side of Chicago follwed as black capital with flourishing buisesses, music, arts, foods. Especially black-owned businesses such as beauty and barber shops, funeral parlors and elite black collegues e.g. Howard, Spellman, Morehouse. As a result own standards of beauty for black women with an emphasis on hair care and emergence of beauty contests in 1920s characterize the Harlem Renaissance.
