Life on Reservations (1 янв 1880 г. – 1 янв 1900 г.)

Описание:

By the 1880s, Indians practically became prisoners on the reservations.

Education:
All Indian children were forced to go to a boarding school away from their parents. They were taught to have no respect for their culture or traditions and were brought up as Christians. They were punished for practicing their religion and speaking their language. If parents refused to send their children, rations would be cut until they agreed.

Religion:
All religious dances, feats and ceremonies were banned, christian missionaries worked in the reservations.

Economic:
Indians relied on government rations and money which could be withdrawn for poor behaviour.

Political:
The power of chiefs were weakened, councils took over their responsibilities. In 1885, the government took over all the legal powers concerning the Indians so they had lost all power to govern themselves.
