Serf: Peasant
Vassal: A person who was granted possession of the land by the lord

Church fulfilled most of the functions we associate with government:
Alleviation of poverty and famine
Health care via hospices
Education
Controlled village markets
Controlled festivals
Church was the basis of learning and literacy
Daily attendance at church was the norm.
