Land was split between VA gov Berkeley and his elite friends, and the native land was not allowed to be taken. Only allowed landowners to vote so this made it hard for lay colonists to have a say in society. Bacon and his followers attacked and burned Jamestown in Bacon's Rebellion. His followers were mainly people who did not have land, such as freed servants. Warships arrived and took down the rebellion, but VA then became a royal colony

Result: elites granted land to free servants as well as lowered taxes. Slaves became more popular as a result.
