Following the Golden Age came the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC), a devastating war pitting one alliance of Greek city-states against another. As Athens had grown in influence and wealth, it be- gan to transform the Delian League into an Athenian empire. Sparta became alarmed over the commercial and political power Athens had acquired.
