Napoleon Bonaparte was a French defender of the Revolution who excelled in the army.
In 1795, he defended the National Convention from royalists. He was promoted to general.
In 1799, he overthrew the directory and seized control of the government. Under him, the army became excellent because its good fighters were generals, not aristocrats. He utilized fast fighting and made France truly good at war.
In 1803, in an effort to gain wealth, he sold the Louisiana Territory to the United States. This also made an enemy of England.
In 1804, he made himself the emperor of France. This development is often viewed as the rise of a dictator.
From 1804-1805, he conquered country after country with his superior army. He became more and more famous, shattering tyranny and spreading enlightenment everywhere he went.
From 1807-1812, he maintained the French Empire at its greatest extent. Nationalism, equality, education, religious tolerance, centralization, and a planned economy reigned.
In 1812, however, he invaded Russia and lost 400,000 men.
In 1813, he was defeated at the battle of Leipzig.
In 1814, he gave up his throne and was exiled.
In 1815, he returned the France but was once more defeated and exiled.
