prohibition in ontario (1 окт 1916 г. – 14 авг 1927 г.)
Описание:
Prohibition periods varied across Canada's provinces, but in Ontario, it began on October 1st, 1916 due to the Ontario Temperance Act. After World War I, many veterans experienced "shellshock," now known as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and turned to alcohol to cope. Drinking became more common in the streets, workplace, and at home. People drank anywhere and anytime they could, including on the job, leading to an inefficient, unhealthy work environment. Men would come home drunk from bars and abuse their wives and children. Women, religious members, and employers were unhappy with the amount of alcohol and inappropriate drunk behaviour in the city. Temperance groups such as the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, pushed for alcohol prohibition, leading to the Ontario Temperance Act's passing in 1916 when Sir Robert Borden was prime minister.
Unfortunately, prohibition led to increased alcohol use, organized crime, and secret consumption and supply of illegal alcohol. People would go to underground bars called speakeasies and drink smuggled alcohol or "moonshine," homemade alcohol. These bars let anyone enjoy alcohol, including women, men, and people of colour, with no judgment. Black people introduced jazz to patrons, and people started to love jazz music. Impressionable women known as flappers rebelled against conventional women by wearing shorter, flowy dresses, acting more outgoing, and drinking alcohol in speakeasies. The government soon realized they needed to reverse prohibition and control alcohol sales, so they implemented the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO).
Today, the effects of prohibition are still seen. The LCBO is now a large chain of hard alcohol stores across Ontario and jazz has been accepted by people, creating a different "party life" than what was seen before. Although prohibition failed, it brought people with a common interest in alcohol together as a community without discrimination.
