Thomas Jefferson was born in the Virginia Colony. His family inherited a plantation and became wealthy. Thomas became a lawyer and took on cases that freed slaves, although he himself had slaves on his plantation. Thomas was greatly influenced by Enlightenment Thinkers, such as John Locke, and Scientists, such as Issac Newton. He also was the author of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas studied many things, like law, science, math, and he became an inventor. He invented many useful things, like Jefferson Cipher and the swivel chair.
