The rivalry fuelling the arms race extended into space exploration.
In 1957, the soviet union launched Sputnik- the first satellite to be sent into space. The USSR saw this as a victory over America. The USA rushed to launch its own satellite, the space race had begun.#-The US satellite was launched in 1958, President Eisenhower founded NASA which focused on space research and exploration.
-The USSR made progress in April 1961, when Gagarin became the first person to travel into space, a month later US sent Shepard into space for first time.
-In 1961, President Kennedy claimed that the USA would put the first man on the moon by the end of the decade.
In early 1960s the US had increased NASAs annual budget from 500m to 5.2b
Project Apollo took place and finally in 1969 Apollo 11 happened which placed Neil Armstrong on the moon.

Tensions escalated further:
more competition between USSR and US formed
Space race became linked to power and status- the superpower that seemed for advanced, would be viewed by the rest of the world as the superior power. This worried US as people may start believing that communism is the way.
Space race also intensified the arms race, the rockets used to launch satellites were also capable of carrying ICBMs - USSRs use to launch their satellite made it clear that they were capable of reaching the US with nuclear weapons, fears of a nuclear attack increased and caused the US to sped up its weapon programmes.
