Charles de Gaulle was a strong right-wing nationalist leader of France during the Cold War. He was an army officer during World War II, a statesman, and president from 1959-1969. He opposed the Fourth Republic and retired from public life in '50s. He returned to power during the Algerian War and became president. He pulled France out of the war with Algeria and allowed its independence, to the surprise of many. He pushed for policies that focused on France and revitalizing their image and stance as the leading nation of Europe. This included pushing France out of NATO, using the war in Algeria to his favor, and creating the fifth French republic with greater powers for the president. He disliked U.S. involvement in Europe, and some of his policies were seen as anti-American.
