r. Metternich (foreign minister) (1 янв 1809 г. – 1 янв 1848 г.)
Описание:
Austrian foreign minister Prince Klemens von Metternich embodied the ideals of conservatism in the first half of the 19th-century. He was hugely influential in post-Napoleonic politics and the Congress of Vienna.
Metternich defended monarchical status quo, making him have stark liberal opposition. He was an internationally oriented aristocrat who made a brilliant diplomatic career. He had a pessimistic view of human nature and thought it was prone to error, excess, and self-serving behavior. Metternich’s conservatism emerged as a powerful new political ideology. He blamed liberal middle-class revolutionaries for stirring up the lower classes and determined that authoritarian, aristocratic government was necessary to protect against the negative sides of human nature that easily arose through democracy. He also argued for organized religion. Conservatives like him regarded tradition as the basic foundation of human society and saw liberalism, especially national independence, as a threat.
