Rossini's father was a hornist and his mother a singer. He studied and toured with them to cities in northern Italy, where he performed and composed arias for local opera productions. A gifted singer, he was accepted into the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica, and deeply studied Haydn and Mozart’s music. He composed his first opera at 18, going on to compose 40 operas by age 40 most of which were successful.
