Reached Land as POW's of Kwajalein (13 июл 1943 г. – 1 янв 0 г.)
Описание:
Following a typhoon, the raft Louis and Phil had drifted closer to the islands. It was here they were spotted and picked out of the ocean by an enemy Japanese freighter. They were examined by a Japanese doctor and treated kindly until their arrival in Kwajalein were they were held as a POW for 42 days. Here Louis got a good look at his own emancipated body. “Louie looked down at his own body. Legs that had sprung through a 4:12 mile over bright sand on that last morning on Kualoa were now useless. The vibrant, generous body that he had trained with such vigilance had shrunken until only the bones remained, draped in yellow skin, crawling with parasites. All I see, he thought, is a dead body breathing.” (Hillebrand, ch 17). This did not stop Louis from fighting, his perseverance and resiliency were stronger. Here the captives were beaten, had stones and cigarettes thrown at them, used as test subjects for biohazard warfare, and given minimal rations and water that only ensured survival. During this time Phil and Louis learned some of the language to ensure their preservation. In Louis' cell he found a list of 9 names of marines etched on his wall, a grim reminder that he was not the first to inhabit those walls. He would now face the additional torment of not knowing what happened to them.
