The Freedom Rides began on May 4th 1961 with a group of African Americans and six Whites who boarded 2 buses heading to New Orleans. In 1946, the Supreme Court banned segregation in interstate bus travel and in 1960, they extended the ruling to include bus terminals, restrooms and other facilities associated with interstate travel. The Freedom Riders decided to challenge this law. When they made stops along the way, white riders used facilities designed for the black and the black riders used facilities designed for the white. They encountered violence in South Carolina and Alabama. On May 14th, they stopped outside Anniston to change a slashed tire. One bus was firebombed and the Freedom Riders were beaten. More freedom riders were recruited along the way. On May 29th, Robert F Kennedy ordered the Interstate Commerce Commission to enforce stricter guidelines banning segregation in interstate travel.
